Five traffic cops arrested over suspected extortion in Kakamega

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives arrested five traffic police officers on Thursday over allegations of extorting money from motorists in the Ekero area along the Kakamega-Bungoma Road in Mumias, Kakamega County.
The arrested officers include Senior Sergeant Julius Kiprotich, Corporal Edna Jeruto, and constables Caroline Emong’ole, John Sugut, and Eric Otwane.
According to the EACC, their arrests stemmed from an investigation prompted by numerous complaints from motorists, boda boda operators, and members of the public.
The officers were reportedly soliciting bribes under the pretext of enforcing traffic laws without conducting proper vehicle inspections.
According to the commission, one suspect attempted to escape from the scene on a motorcycle, but the riders at the scene refused to transport him.
The suspects were taken to the EACC Western Regional Office in Bungoma for processing.
The anti-corruption agency stated that they would later be moved to Bungoma Police Station.
